Whitley’s Boxfish

Ostracion whitley

Whitley’s boxfish are not as common as spotted boxfish, at least not on the Big Island. Males are a vivid dark blue and females appear gold or tan and white. The Whitley’s boxfish we have seen seem to prefer deeper water than spotted boxfish.
All boxfish release ostracitoxin when stressed. This is poisonous to other fish including boxfish and also to humans.
