Stareye Parrotfish

Stareye parrotfish are named for the star pattern around their eyes. Females are not as colorful as males and they have sometimes the scales have a checkered appearance; sometimes the star pattern is subtle. Stareye parrotfish are smaller than some other varieties of parrotfish in Hawaii. like all parrotfish, they can switch between being male and female and chew up coral. Most of the white sand found near Hawaii’s reefs is actually coral that parrotfish have chewed up. Underwater where there are parrotfish, you can hear them biting the coral.
