Spotted Boxfish

Ostracion meleagris

These small boxfish are common on Hawaiian reefs. Often solitary individuals are seen but also sometimes more than one together. Spotted boxfish males have beautiful dark blue and yellow coloring, and the females are brown or black and white. When under stress, a boxfish releases ostracitoxin, which is a potent toxin that affects other fish including boxfish.
